SYRIA RESTRAINS HIZBULLAH AMID STATE OF EMERGENCY December 7, 2001

The Middle East Newsline reports: “Syria is said to be restraining both the Iranian-backed Hizbullah as well as Palestinian insurgency groups in Lebanon amid Israel's military campaign against the Palestinian Authority.
Lebanese government sources said the Syrian restraint is the fulfillment of a pledge by Damascus to Washington to ensure quiet along Israel's northern border. Hizbullah launched several rocket attacks in October on Israeli military positions along the border with Lebanon.

The Syrian commitment has led to what the sources termed a temporary suspension of Hizbullah operations along the Israeli border. The sources said that neither Lebanon nor Syria was prepared to acknowledge the arrangement at the disputed Shebba plateau.

The sources said both Lebanon and Syria have taken steps to ease U.S. pressure on the two Arab neighbors to join the war against terrorism. Beirut and Damascus have reduced the number of Iranian soldiers in Lebanon, destroyed poppy fields in the Bekka Valley and acted against suspected money-launderers…”
