More signs SOI is needed:

Mike at the Register has an article about SUN considering switching to Taiwan FABs (that are going to SOI) which would mean dropping Texas Instruments (that duplicated Intel's stupid mistake of not going with SOI).

Intel is scrambling to catch up, but is now several years behind in that particular race. TI may not be able to afford the effort needed to recover from such a blunder, and could now be finished as a high end foundry - leaving SUN forced to find another foundry to FAB its parts.

The article quotes David Yen, Sun's GM in Taiwan, as saying that the firm "is leaning towards outsourcing" low end UltraSparc chips to the plucky little island, and may shift production of the UltraSparc III there as well.

There is no explicit mention of SOI, but what else could TI be lacking? SUN and TI have long co-developed Sparc (TI process and SUN the chip) but with TI having been as dumb as Intel, it looks like SUN is going to have to find another source to FAB its Sparcs.
