I just got hooked up with one of these cable modems with MediaOne which was formerly Continental Cable. Lemme tell you it is great. I dunno the speed except to say it is fast. No page, no matter how complicated takes more then a few seconds to load. Files that would take hours now take minutes. I never upgraded from my 486 because the phone line was the bottleneck. Now it's time to go pentium.

Anyway, yes the cable modem hooks your computer to the same cable your TV is on. It is the copper coax that comes in to the house. I think however that it is based on being a fiber system. They can't run the fiber into your house because you would have no way to hook up to it. So the system is fiber up to the point where they convert it to cable so you can hook to it. I don't know where the fiber stops and the cable starts but I don't think it would work without fiber most of the way.
