RESEARCH ALERT-Salomon raises Natl Semiconductor to 'buy'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Salmon Smith Barney said Friday it raised its rating and price target for National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM - news) after the chipmaker reported a narrower-than-expected second-quarter loss.

Analyst Jon Joseph, in a research note, boosted his rating to "buy" from "outperform" and increased his 12-month price target to $45 from $35.

He said much of the fiscal second-quarter strength resulted from better-than-expected gross margins of 35.3 percent. National Semi also is looking for a smaller-than-expected decline in fiscal third-quarter revenues, he said.

Joseph narrowed his fiscal 2002 loss estimate to 92 cents from $1.03 a share. He also introduced a fiscal 2003 estimate of 70 cents and a fiscal 2004 estimate of $2.00.
