Papua New Guinea --> Queensland gas project: Some interesting facts from Australian Gas Supply and Demand Study 1997:

Queensland is expected to have the highest growth rate for new gas consumption in Australia. Strong growth is expected in the industrial sector. Eastern Australia will need longer distance supplies (outside the region) to meet forecast demand to 2030, and it is especially critical to have sufficient gas available early next century.

The Study forecasts increasing interstate gas trade, new pipelines and the creation of an integrated pipeline grid. Proposed developments will expand Australia's network by 38 percent and will result in an integrated pipeline grid for eastern Australia.

Natural gas will be Australia's fastest growing energy source to 2030 with average annual projected growth around 3.0 percent. Gas is forecast to raise its national primary energy share from about 18 percent to above 28 percent. Real growth is expected across each gas market sector (residential, commercial, industrial, power generation and transport) with industry (including mining and processing) remaining the largest volume gas consumer area.

Gas reform initiatives to achieve free and fair trade (including national open access) must be processed urgently with policy decisions taken no later than 1997. This is critical given an imminent need for investment decisions regarding long term gas infrastructure projects such as pipelines to ensure adequate and cost effective gas supplies in the first decade of the next century.

The Study was released in Canberra 26-05-97 at the national Gas Industry Forum by the Commonwealth Minister for Resources and Energy.
