Nvidia set to buy AMD

Warchests of Wonga
By Paul Hales, 06/12/2001 16:11:08 BST

HAVING SOLD OFF some 20 million of its own shares at the end of November, nVidia is looking for something to spend the wonga on, reports are claiming. And what better move than to snap up tiddly chip company AMD?
German site PC Welt claims Russian Gaming World is suggesting Graphzilla is eyeing up the Seething Chipmonk as a decent investment for all the cash it now has sloshing about.

Our German is quite a bit better than our Russian so we do know that PC Welt is distancing itself from the claim, saying it's just the sort of rumour you can find on the Web if you dig deep enough.

What we can't find is any mention of the rumour on the Russian site whence it allegedly originated.

Still, if nVidia decides not to snap up AMD it could always try on SGI (share price today $2.25) for size, the Germans blame the Russians for suggesting.

We reckon nVidia would do well to keep the wonga in its warchest, at least until it sells a few nForce "platforms". There's nothing like biting into more than one can usefully digest. µ

* AND THE AMD rumours are rife today, with some tickers carrying other possible canards such as ST Microelectronics buying AMD (share price now $15.95) ....
