Personally, I've felt that members of Al Qaeda have been in the Palestinian territories, and influenced operations there for quite a while. I'm also fairly sure that Arafat knew about the attack against the US, on Sept 11th, a long time before the attack.

While I agree in general terms, I feel sure that Al Quaeda is too professional to let details of their operations leak out, even to comrades in arms. I'm sure the scope of the attacks, and their success, came as a shock.
