Many apps have options to check for patches/updates... don't recall that MS Office has that, but it could. Check for viruses too.. MS Word and Excel have macro languages that can permit virus corruption.

EDIT: I just checked my ZoneAlarm program list.. Excel is NOT in the list, so my version has never attempted to access the net.
