Dan: TI is falling behind as a foundry. SUN needs to partner with Motorola, IBM, AMD, or Intel.

AMD has zero experience as a foundry.
Intel is a major competitor.
Motorola doesn't exactly have a sterling reputation with their PowerPC fits.

That leaves IBM, who is also a major competitor, but who would certainly be willing to fab for Sun (IBM's fab unit is completely separate from its CPU unit). However, IBM's fab process (reportedly) isn't quite as advanced as the one they use for the Power4s.

UMC or TSMC would seem a better overall choice. TI would likely be able to offer Sun more process design help, although I am not aware of the exact nature of their relationship.
