SGI Japan's Broadband SI Unit to Begin Operations November 30, 2001 (TOKYO) -- SGI Japan Ltd. said that Media Cruise Solutions KK (MCS) will start full-fledged operations in January 2002.
MCS is a broadband SI company that was established in April 2001. It is capitalized at 100 million yen. (123.36 yen = US$1) Major shareholders of the company include SGI Japan holding 15 percent; NEC Corp., 10 percent; Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., NTT Software Corp. and BSI Co., Ltd., 5 percent respectively; U.K.-based Thirdspace Living Ltd., 4 percent; and U.S.-based On2 Technologies Inc., 1 percent.
Specifically, MCS will sell Thirdspace Living's video server software called "thirdspace OVS" and middleware for establishing interactive TV systems called "thirdspace Vortel" in Japan. In addition, the company will develop set-top boxes (STBs) compatible with those software packages.
Also, MCS plans to launch other businesses. For example, by using On2 Technologies's image compression technology, it will establish a system that enables image distribution at the low bit rate of between 500kbps and 1Mbps.
By taking advantage of its own software technology, MCS will operate SI businesses, such as the system consulting and construction of networks and systems, targeting broadcasting stations, CATV businesses and content owners.
It will emphasize construction of total broadband-based systems and providing broadband-related SI services. Such services include the development and sales of server systems that are the core of the broadband system, as well as STBs for devices. Also included are production, management and distribution of high-volume contents, fee-based services, client management services and copyright management services.
Through these businesses, MCS aims to achieve annual sales of 3 billion yen in fiscal 2002.
