We refinished the floors at our last place. We used big orbital sanders, not belt sanders. It took a long, long time but didn't kick up much dust. Only problem was that we sanded one room longer than the other, and it soaked up more finish and was a little darker. Orbital sanders don't chew down like belt sanders, so they don't take off as much wood and they don't leave gouges, which I was sure I would get if I used a belt sander.

The library I went to had back issues of Consumer Reports but nothing like This Old House. They said Pergo holds up better than wood to begin with, but when it goes bad you can't refinish, you have to rip it up and start over.

Several houses in the neighborhood have the same floor plan as ours, so when they are for sale we take a look during the open houses to see what they've done with them, and talk to the real estate agents to see what's good to do. They recommended hardwood floors as an upgrade.

I am going to take a look at cork, though.

I've always wanted to visit FallingWater. It looks so dreamy in photos.
