average post World War II recession mean is 10.7 months for the 9 recessions standard deviation is 3.4 months all but three recessions, or 6 out of 9, fall within one standard deviation from the mean the three 'outliers' consisted of a 6 month recession and the two 16 month recessions sources: nber.org
