It came up during discussions with some of the more Intel-centric folk on the board. Wanna provided some links to Intel presentations that, although vague, did seem to hint that something was going on.

Furthermore, Intel claimed a 30% or 40% increase in 3D rendering performance (Maya, IIRC) when JT was enabled. This is a completely SSE2 optimized application we're talking about here and I can only think of one place such an increase could come from: more decode resources / larger trace cache.

Since Intel has settled on a 2-way multi-threading scheme, it seems reasonable that it would be realistic, if nothing else, to double much of the front end. This would help minimize the overhead of switching threads as well as simplify the architecture (at the cost of space).
