RESEARCH ALERT-Salomon cuts Centillium to 'outperform'
NEW YORK, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Salomon Smith Barney on Monday cut its investment rating on Centillium Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:CTLM - news), a maker of high-speed Internet equipment technology, to ``outperform'' from ``buy.''

Analyst Clark Westmont, in a research note, cited the company's slower-than-expected ramp-up in customers' central office asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) platforms. That could delay the recovery in Centillium's overall sales trend, he said.

``On the positive side, we believe the ADSL end-market environment is improving, and the valuation is appealing,'' Westmont wrote. ``Our $12 price target is justifiable on valuation alone, in our opinion.''

Centillium shares closed Friday at $8.85.
