At this stage of the game, if the merger doesn't happen, Compaq likely dies. This had've impacted their sales of servers and higher end products. And for those that still bought from Compaq, the uncertainty would have caused some, if not most, to put into place plans to migrate away from Compaq.

Actually, AMD very well might benefit from that. The barrier to entry in PCs is low, so a vacuum like that would draw new players into the market. And new players mean new opportunities.
