please let us know how it went
Not well, I am afraid. I printed out the manual conversion instructions, took them home, followed them to adjust my settings, disabled the firewall, then re-booted. Nothing. I power-cycled the modem. Still nothing. On Sunday morning I tried calling customer service, but they weren't accepting calls (apparently when the queue is full, the prompt which allows you to speak to a representative is disabled). I did get into the queue yesterday afternoon, and after almost 4 hours, most of which was spent on hold, they decided that I need a truck roll. Think January (of 02, I hope).
What the CSR said was that since I have a non-DOCSIS compliant modem (a Motorola Cybersurfer), it doesn't have a MAC address, which was OK with the ATHM network but not OK with their new network. I am doubtful (who would design a network without legacy support), and think it is more likely they just wanted to move the problem over to someone else when the easy stuff didn't work. Anybody else up and running with a Cybersurfer? We'll see whether Pacbell (who have not yet called to set up a DSL installation appointment) can do so before the scheduled date, although I guess I now get free service for a couple of months after they finally get cable working, right? |
