Isn't Clear Type the default setting?

On both RC2 and Windows Home Edition I've had to enable it so I would have to say it is not the default.

On a larger monitor the difference is probably less dramatic.

I changed from a 19" Sony Triniton monitor set at 1600x1200 resolution to a 15" LCD monitor set at max 1024x768 and found less clarity(font smoothing) with the 15" LCD.

The 19" had perfect smoothness and while the 15" is passable it leaves a bit to be desired.

I do favor the LCD monitor so once again it's another one of lifes little tradeoffs in the name of progress.
