Swisscom To Supply UMTS To 20% Of Switzerland By End '02

ZURICH -- Swiss telecommunications provider Swisscom AG (SCM) said Monday its mobile phone unit will be able to provide Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service, or UMTS, coverage for 20 percent of the Swiss population by the end of 2002.

Swisscom said it has set up UMTS calls on its own UMTS pilot network in Bern and that the tests were successful.

Swisscom also said it plans to set up further UMTS base stations in collaboration with Sweden's telecom equipment maker Telefon AB LM Ericsson (ERICY).
