Al-Qaeda fighters surrender in Tora Bora
AP
Afghanistan, December 11
Tuesday, Sep 11

Tribal fighters on Tuesday declared a ceasefire when some retreating fighters loyal to Osama bin Laden around Tora Bora mountain in eastern Afghanistan agreed to surrender to militia forces, a local commander said.
Mohammed Zaman, defence chief for the Tribal eastern alliance, agreed to the truce during a two-way radio conversation with Arab Al-Qaeda forces who came under heavy shelling as they attempted to descend the mountain and flee into neighbouring Pakistan.

Zaman, one of the three leaders of local groups hostile to bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network, told journalists of the surrender following several hours of fierce fighting around the mountain.

Zaman said the mostly foreign Al-Qaeda fighters had agreed to come down from the mountain at 8:00am (0330 GMT) on Wednesday.

"It's finished," Zaman told journalists. "They told us: 'We don't want to fight with you, we surrender'."

However, it was unclear whether all of the Al-Qaeda forces around Tora Bora would take part in any truce or were willing to commit to a total surrender. In the past, forces loyal to Osama bin Laden have vowed to fight to the death.
