What about the economy? Shouldn't we all be fighting the recessions? Wasn't Osama's goal to wreck the economy to destroy America? And it is our duty to do everything we can to make sure he doesn't achieve his goal? If so, and I believe that to be so, then Daschle is a traitor.

It’s just a little tough getting into what you might call a “Christmas Spirit” this year. The 9/11 attacks certainly have something to do with it, as does our war against terrorism. The economy is another player. Maybe it’s harder to hit the egg nog when hundreds of thousands of people have just recently lost their jobs.

Will the economy recover without some kind of an economic stimulus bill from Washington? Absolutely! No doubt it will. All a stimulus bill could do would be to hasten that recovery. There are those who think such a stimulus bill is essential, I’m not sure one way or the other.

For those out of work and for those having a bit of trouble paying the bills an stimulus bill would be an immediate help. So --- where’s the beef?

I bring all of this up to remind you of a political fact of life. The Democrats do not want the economy to improve any time soon. They want this economy to continue to limp along until after next year’s congressional elections. If there is one thing Democrats know it’s how to play to ignorant voters. They realize that the large majority of American voters couldn’t write one cohesive sentence detailing the causes of the current economic slowdown. These people just reflexively (and with no small amount of help from the leftist, pro-Democrat media) blame it on whoever is in the White House. Actually learning something about the workings of our economy and how it reacts to tax policy would take far too much time away from watching Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight and whatever professional wrestling might be on the tube tonight.

Democrats know that if the economy starts to recover too soon the voters are going to think that Bush has worked some economic magic and Democratic chances to keep their senate majority – and to take the house – will weaken. Since an economic stimulus bill would speed up the inevitable economic recovery, the stimulus bill must be stalled.

Republicans control the House of Representatives. The house has passed an economic stimulus bill. A Republican sits in the White House. The President has announced his support for the house bill. All that is left is for the Senate to act. Democrats control the Senate. Tom Daschle controls the Democrats. Tom Dashle won’t let the Senate act on a stimulus bill.

Are the Republicans adept enough to let the American people know that the one great obstacle to speeding up our economic recovery is Tom Dashle and the Senate Democrats? It takes a special political skill on the part of the Republicans to get this message over to the people – especially since the message has to be filtered through broadcast networks and newspapers friendly to Democrats. The Republicans just don’t have that level of political skill.

So --- Daschle sits fat and happy in the Senate leadership seat (thanks to Jim Jeffords) while people struggle to get some toys under Christmas trees. To Daschle, the fate of Democratic candidates in next year’s elections is of far more importance than the economic health of American families during this holiday season.

Daschle’s job is to bring Democrats to power. The people? Let them eat fruit cake.
