Brazil Selects DCH to Present at National Alternative Energy Forum
VALENCIA, Calif., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- DCH Technology, Inc. (Amex: DCH), a manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen-specific sensors and provider of hydrogen safety services, was selected by the Brazilian government to present DCH Enable(TM) fuel cell products to more than 200 members and associates of the Brazilian electric utility industry and other regional businesses. DCH, the only company presenting fuel cells, was invited to attend after a review of alternative fuel cell technologies and products by government representatives at the Hannover Fair in Germany.
The presentation took place over three days the last week of November, during which DCH delivered and demonstrated an Enable(TM) 1 kW fuel cell at the remote meeting location -- in Manaus, more than a thousand miles inland along the Amazon River.
"Our PEM technology, which can respond to grid drop on the order of 70 microseconds, is uniquely suited to the electric power industry. DCH was selected by the Brazilian government to discuss and demonstrate our fuel cells as part of a potential solution to both their current energy crisis and as a long-term hedge against future shortages of hydroelectric power," said Dennis Reid, Vice President-Investor Relations.
"Bringing a working fuel cell deep into the country also spoke volumes about the durability and portability of DCH products meeting the country's serious need for remote power. The clean, quiet power it provided -- versus the diesel and gas generators commonly used -- was dramatic. The forum was an excellent first step in forging what we believe could be a very mutually beneficial relationship."
Brazil's hydro-dependent electricity sector is strained beyond capacity after several years of below-average rainfall, leaving reservoirs about 30% full. In May 2001, the government announced that both industrial and residential consumers must reduce their electricity consumption by 20% for the following five months or face government fines. The government has also contemplated measures such as reducing the workday from eight to six hours and reducing the workweek from five days to four, in efforts to stretch the limited electricity supply. Analysts vary in predictions of how long the crisis will last and how severe the economic impacts will be.
