Aus, I'm familiar with the Drexler card, which came out many years ago. It has little, if any privacy protection and may be compared with a low capacity Compact Flash card. The idea behind the use of the SD card, as I understand it, is to provide the patient with at least the possibility of better privacy protection. The patient would in effect own the data, and it could be released only with the patient's permission, given when the card was inserted into the reader attached to an institution's data archive.

The storing of patient data online is an approach favored by Microsoft. I'm not so sure I wouldn't prefer a less universal access, say, through an insurer or through the health care institution giving the primary care.

I'm glad to hear that your hospital or institution has seen the light and adopted laptops with wireless LAN. It is clearly the most sensible approach, and one which virtually any type of institution with a central campus could use to advantage.
