I can't really add anything you would feel is important to your discussion (since I'm one of those "nuts" who believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible) and excuse me for "butting in" but I recently read a book I enjoyed on Mt Sinai.

It's called "the Mount Sinai Myth" by Larry Williams and (for me) identifies the location of the mountain as being Jabal Al Lawz in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Pictures of the rock pillars at it's base, the cave of Elijah, the alter site of the Golden Calf, etc. etc.

Sure -- the Lord didn't put a roadsign labeling it, and the writer may be wrong, but for me, it was interesting, exciting, and correct.
