Albert,

Some in the U.S. government indeed wanted to invade Europe in 1942. The British were dead-set against it.

If we had- with green troops, inadequate landing craft, and the Luftwaffe able to contest control of the sky- we would have been slaughtered. Witness the Canadians at Dieppe.

However, it might have taken some pressure off the Soviets.
