Its pretty hard if you don't want to hurt him in the process.

I think that our entire disagreement on the definition of the word pacifism. Fighting back or forcibly detaining someone didn't seem that pacifist to me. If you are allowed to fight you probably would be allowed to use weapons (esp weapons that are not particularly deadly) so it should be much easier to defeat someone with a baseball bat...

Using your definition "opposition to war or violence as a means of settling disputes" pacifism could include those not opposed to all violence but totally opposed to war, or it could be interpreted to include only those
opposed to all violence. The word violence could be interpreted to exclude force used only to restrain that doesn't cause much damage (but it's always much harder to restrain someone if you want to avoid hurting them). If you don't make that exclusion and abstain from any physical force then you are left with persuasion which will not always work.
