Rand McNally Company Overview

From its beginnings as a small Chicago printing shop in 1856, Rand McNally & Company launched a 144-year journey that has led the company to its place as the world's premier provider of geographic and travel information.
Rand McNally today enjoys a status achieved by few companies. It is one of the world's most recognized - and trusted - corporate names. Its products are market leaders in a variety of travel and reference categories. In fact, Rand McNally created - and continues to lead - many of those categories. Now, at the turn of the millennium, it is known for creating new products and services that take advantage of rapidly changing technology.
Rand McNally understands how people use travel and geographic information today and provides leading products in every avenue of communication: in printed materials, software products, and the Internet. The products in each area stand on their own, but much of their appeal lies in the fact that they are integrated to work together. For instance, many travelers plan trips and print out maps, directions, and other information using TripMaker® software. They use this information in conjunction with the large, highly detailed, and easy-to-read color maps in the Rand McNally Road Atlas. Finally, they get construction and weather updates from the company's Web site on the Internet (at www.randmcnally.com). The company even publishes a Kids' Road Atlas, which gives children a fun and informative way to follow the family journey on their own. The company relaunched its Web site in the fall of 1999 and now provides address-to-address driving directions, world mapping, downloadable color maps, a host of travel planning features, and an enhanced online Map & Travel Store with more than 3,500 products.
These software and Internet products are just the most visible indicator of Rand McNally's embrace of the digital technology that has revolutionized the field of cartography. Using the computer's ability to store and manage enormous amounts of data, Rand McNally has created electronic databases that transcend the limitations of manual cartography.
Many of the company's products, including the flagship Rand McNally Road Atlas, are now created entirely from its electronic databases. This dramatically increases the company's ability to incorporate quickly the abundance of map changes, new editorial information, and political restructurings that need to be reflected in its products, as well as to create customized products and integrate information in several formats.
Today, Rand McNally addresses the travel information needs of people and businesses around the world.

• With its extensive service-driven distribution network, it reaches consumers everywhere through mass merchandisers, bookstores, office supply stores, truck stops, and other retail outlets -- including its own 29 retail stores. Rand McNally provides consumers with information critical to the planning, navigation, and enjoyment of their leisure, personal, or business travel.

• Rand McNally delivers geographic and travel information in a variety of formats, including the renowned Rand McNally Road Atlas -- sold in the United States for over 75 years -- as well as its award-winning consumer software -- Tripmaker® travel planning software and Streetfinder® street atlas software. Rand McNally publishes a wide-range of local travel products, including its StreetFinder® detailed street atlases, EasyFinder® laminated maps, MapGuide® pocket maps and directories, and The Thomas Guide®, known along the Pacific Coast as the authoritative street-level map source.

• The Company operates 29 retail stores around the United States as well as a comprehensive online travel store (www.randmcnallystore.com).

• Rand McNally provides support to school systems and educators around the world, with classroom maps, atlases, globes, and geo-skills development materials for grades kindergarten through college, including Goode's World Atlas, the leading college atlas since 1922. For more information, see www.k12online.com.

• Rand McNally is a leading provider of geographic products and travel-related games and activities for children.

• Rand McNally Canada produces a variety of maps and atlases for the Canadian marketplace, as well as custom premium and incentive products for the business-to-business market.

• From its first map, published over a hundred years ago, Rand McNally has published a full line of world atlases and other geographic reference materials.

• Shippers and motor carriers turn daily to Rand McNally as a primary supplier of mileage rating, route planning, and fleet optimization software in North America through its MileMaker™ and IntelliRoute™ multi-platform commercial software. For more information, see www.milemaker.com.

• Many corporations, large and small, have for many years seen the value of sharing Rand McNally's print and electronic product offerings with their customers and employees as a low-cost, high value premium or incentive.

In March of 1999 Rand McNally acquired Thomas Bros. Maps, a leading producer of local travel mapping products and another pioneer in digital map publishing. The California-based company is best known for the Thomas Guides, which are the "Bible" for drivers on the West Coast and are now sold in other major cities throughout America.
In April of 1999 Rand McNally acquired King of the Road Map Service Inc., a Washington-based publisher and distributor of local mapping products on the West Coast.
At the turn of the millennium Rand McNally is prepared to continue its 144-year journey, creating and perfecting travel and geographic information products and services for another generation.
