Atherosclerosis is believed to form as a result of processes in the underlying epithelial (artery lining) cells, not just by a randomn "silting out" of cholesterol plaque. Often times the analogy used is that of pipes clogged by grease, but IMO this is misleading and a better analogy is that of pipes clogged by corrosion "blossoming" out of the pipe surface. So in effect, IMO MLNM is saying that they believe that this gene may be involved in that corrosion process.
