I support the idea of going after Bin Laden in Afghanistan, as I have said before (why did you forget my saying that?). It is possible that other methods would have been better, but I'm not sure. I'm not a war strategist. I think Chomsky has a valid gripe about the U.S. bombing campaign, and the rejection of negotiations. Many people around the world feel the bombing was gratuitous and unnecessary, so it is possible that our actions will create more angry terrorists. There is absolutely no doubt that there was strong popular pressure on Bush to commit actions that seemed decisive and vengeful, so it is at least possible that he rejected more sensible measures in favor of less sensible measures, no?
