OT-Anybody here know anything about LED illumination? I have been noticing a significant increase in the use of LEDs to replace conventional light bulbs in everything from flashlights to display signs and even traffic lights. Apparently they use just a fraction of the electricity so even fairly large systems can be solar powered sacramento.bcentral.com, they are less breakable than conventional bulbs since they don't use glass, and they don't have to be replaced very frequently.

I don't have any hard numbers on the size of the illumination market and I know almost nothing about how LEDs are manufactured, but I have a hunch that the cost of making LEDs has dropped to the point that it is more and more feasible to use them for conventional illumination and display applications.

Anyone here want to help me brainstorm as to whether this is an investable trend and how best to play?

I've started to draw up a list of companies that may be involved but the problem is in finding purer plays. This is tough since most of the LED companies like Toshiba are so huge. If this is the case, I am wondering if the better way to play might be through the compound semi equips???

Would appreciate any input. Let's brainstorm together, invest together, and help bring the industry out of its slump.<g>
