The problem is normally not the server - Windows-based and Unix-based servers behave approximately the same. The problem isn't even client OS related.

If you create a text/plain file with html content, all browsers should show this as text and should show all the tags all over. All browsers except Microsoft Internet Explorer do that - one except is the KDE environment, where it chooses to launch an ascii editor instead of a browser display when it finds out that it isn't text/html.

Microsoft Internet Explorer, on the other hand, auto-detects the contents of the file and shows it as a web-page, directly in violation of the web standards and the intention of the web server operator.

I made an example that can be seen here:

download.dybdahl.dk

These browsers work:

- Mozilla (Gecko based)
- Netscape 6.x (Gecko based)
- Galeon (Gecko based)
- K-Meleon (Gecko based)
- Nautilus (Gecko based)
- Netscape 4.x and earlier
- Konqueror
- Lynx

These browsers are broken and display the page incorrectly:

- Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Opera 6
