Betamax, etc.

1) It is my understanding that VHS is the US standard but Beta dominates the rest of the world. If I'm right, then its a paradigm I think AAPL could live with.

2) On Sony licensing Rhapsody: It makes intuitive sense to me.

* The elegance of the MacOS is appealing to the Japanese. (Intel just put out a survey showing a relatively low penetration of PCs in Japan.)

* If Sony stays with the Pentium platform, it will seek ways to set itself apart from other Intel box makers.

3) Spoke to a guy who runs a sound studio (Mac) but works with both platforms. He said (without prompting) that if he had any spare money, he'd be buying AAPL stock. "They're going to make a lot of money." He said.

When I asked him why, he said if AAPL distributed free 30-day trial versions of Rhapsody to PC owners, a *lot* would switch and never look back.

Along those lines, see next post.
