Corvis Establishes Milestone in Raman Innovation and Leadership
Corvis-enabled carrier networks approach 500,000 Lit Raman Wavelength Kilometers
COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2001--Corvis Corporation (NASDAQ:CORV - news), a leading provider of intelligent optical networking solutions, announced that it has reached new milestones in helping carriers build profitable, robust networks. Corvis Raman-based solutions now carry commercial traffic over 500,000 Lit Raman Wavelength Kilometers (LRWKs) in multiple nationwide carrier networks.

``In addition to setting a milestone for the industry, this announcement demonstrates the acceptance of Corvis' technology vision,'' said Andrew McCormick, director of Optical Networking at Optical Strategies. ``Corvis has been instrumental in moving Raman-based solutions out of the laboratory and into live carrier deployments during 2001.''

``These achievements demonstrate the robustness of our innovative technologies, which provide carriers unique competitive advantages to succeed and grow, even during these economically challenging times,'' said Dr. David Huber, President and CEO, Corvis. ``Through the speed and flexibility of our optically optimized networks, we provide carriers with the quickest path to profitability.''

Corvis is the first vendor to deploy terrestrial Raman-based optical amplifier solutions commercially, as an alternative to traditional systems based on Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) technology. Corvis Raman amplification technologies deliver robust performance in a network environment by providing innovative features, such as automatically controlling channel powers during transient power/signal changes and network reconfigurations to maintain optimal network performance. In addition, Corvis Raman-based automated solutions offer carriers several key benefits, including:

Lower capital costs. Raman-based systems require fewer costly regeneration sites along the optical path than traditional EDFA-based systems. With fewer regeneration sites along the optical path, the carrier benefits not only from decreased costs, but also from enhanced network reliability.
Higher reliability. Unlike EDFA-based systems, in which an amplifier failure shuts down the network link, Raman-based systems continue to operate even in the event of an amplifier failure. In addition, Corvis Raman-based systems are designed with distributed redundancy, which automatically adjusts to compensate for an amplifier failure, with no resulting downtime. This distributed redundancy is less expensive to deploy and operate than EDFA-based solutions that can require at least twice the number of pumps to provide a comparable degree of resiliency.
Speed to revenue. With less equipment required in Raman-based networks, carriers can benefit from significantly reduced time to market. Incremental circuits can be added in minutes to the Corvis Raman-based system with no service interruption. Slow, costly site visits required by traditional systems to manually adjust amplifiers are eliminated.
Greater revenue potential and protection. Automatic amplifier control schemes efficiently and rapidly adjust to transient conditions that potentially can impact performance. For example, in cases of a pump failure, Raman-based solutions preserve signal transparency to minimize traffic outages. Additionally, Corvis solutions improve system performance over the full spectrum of fiber types, from standard Single Mode Fiber to Dispersion-Shifted Fiber. Carriers can meet stringent service level agreements for high performance demands and emerging revenue-generating services.
Superior future-readiness. Raman-based investments can flexibly and cost-effectively scale capacity to multi-terabit levels by supporting both in-service L-Band expansions and by enabling the carrier to increase the spectral efficiency of their fiber.
