Wasn't the original Celeron a real attempt to drive AMD out of the market?

Only if you first assume it was then use your assumption as confirmation.

Why do you look at it as personal? There was a market Intel realized they had ignored and Intel decided they could compete effectively. Who say's Intel can't compete for market share without it being interpreted as an attack on AMD? Business is business and it's open to everyone to compete. Low margin is better than no margin. Maybe you heard the sour grape claims from the AMDroids about Celeron. They claimed Intel must be losing money but they weren't. Funny how it's only wrong for Intel to sell at a loss. AMD can undercut Intel's prices and sell at a loss and that's fine but if Intel should then respond with competitive pricing, they claim Intel is starting a price war. They think the war starts when Intel fires back...
