Ciena sees first quarter sales down 30-40 percent

NEW YORK, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Optical networking company Ciena Corp. (NasdaqNM:CIEN - news) on Thursday said it expects sales in the first quarter to fall 30 percent to 40 percent, adding that the revenue decline could lead to an operating loss for the year.

Ciena, which posted lower fiscal fourth-quarter operating earnings due to a slowdown in capital spending in the communications sector, said in a conference call following its earnings release it expected to post a loss in the range of 8 cents to 12 cents per share in the first quarter.

The company said, however, that it expected 2002 operating cash flow would not be negative for the year, and said it expected sales of its CoreDirector, an optical switching system, would be up in the first quarter from the fourth quarter.

But sales in its long-haul segment business could fall as much as 50 percent in the first quarter, it said.
