The other thing to consider is that efforts to stimulate demand before and since Sep 11 may be drawing demand forward so that next Spring will be weaker than expected. Also, the continuation of the new car incentives will hurt sales of other goods since the traditional car buying season is usually March to June. The current period in which people may have spent shoring up personal balance sheets was instead preoccuppied with getting further extended in debt.
