JOHANNESBURG – South African investors piled into gold shares today, with four counters reaching record highs as the rand plummeted to its lowest level ever. The local currency went as low as R11.40 to the dollar during the day, sending the rand-gold price soaring to R101,440.00/kg and the gold index to 1713, its highest level since April 1999. The firmer dollar-bullion price, hovering around $275/oz, also added some momentum to the run.
