Announced today that VAST quantities of hydrogen have been found on Mars by the newly arrived NASA probe.

I am not saying that this is answering your "where do we get the hydrogen from" question but it will surely mean the boffins will be working hard on hydrogen based technologies so that future missions can use these Martian reserves for energy, water and rocket fuel production. I guess there will be earthly spin offs.
