You are right, they are getting closer. The most recent numbers I can find with a quick search show Intel just over $2 Billion while AMD/Fujitsu are at $2.7 Billion.

If you want to consider that Intel can justify another 50,000 sq. ft. of its 2,000,000 to 2,500,000 sq. ft. please don't let me stop you. Then they're only paying to run 1,050,000 too many sq. ft. instead of 1,100,000 too many sq. ft. of cleanroom space.
