Maybe so, but it is people in desperate straights that are easily lead to do extreme things. But I would agree that Bin Laden's organization is full of people who in other circumstances might have been part of high society. However, they wouldn't be dangerous if it weren't for their ability to influence the masses into suicide bombings and other extreme acts. As far as people like John Lindh or Walker or whatever his name is, there are always the exceptions to every society. By and large, if a society has the means to support itself, extremism is a rarety or just exercised by criminals. In a poverty stricken society extremism is much more prevalent, because cornered or desperate people do desperate things.
