RE: Gun craftsmanship

Hi Richard,

Actually, a few of my relatives used to be fishing and hunting guides up in our area, and so I've seen a lot of interesting rifles over the years. As you have mentioned, some of them are amazing works of art and craftsmanship...both the wooden stocks and the metalwork. And as you have mentioned, the art of the gunsmith can be appreciated on much more than one level. I feel the same way about woodworking tools. I'm crazy over old handmade tools, wooden planes, etc... Although they were meant mainly as working "tools", many of them illustrate the great care that went into their making. Also, it is amazing to see the inventiveness of the toolmakers as they crafted tools for cabinetmaking and carving which produced finished pieces of fine furniture, etc... which are above the level of almost anything which is produced in our day of modern tools. I buy many of my "new" tools at Lee Valley tool company (based on Ottawa), which is a popular mailorder cabinet-making tool business. I receive their annual and many supplemental catalogues throughout the year. They always feature beautifully photographed antique tools on the cover of each issue of the catalogue. I save the fronts off of all of them. They always have some of their collection on display in a case at the store in Ottawa. Some of the tools are just amazing. I keep hoping that they will eventually open some kind of a museum because the company's collection is becoming very extensive. Something to look forward to I guess...(-:

Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone sounds great...and I've always wanted to see those geysers... I think I first saw them in some old Walt Disney movies with bears or something... Looked pretty neat... So maybe Yellowstone should be added to my "trip to the west" list...

Regards,
Bev
