"Now do you get it?" The problem with the dollar is not that it will immediately collapse, but that there is a limit to the extent to which we can afford to exchange our assets for foreign goods. When the tide turns the results will be extraordinarily difficult to absorb and our standard of living will be sharply affected in relation to those people who will then own the assets we sold to buy their goods. Maybe it can go on for a few more years. But eventually the results will be very unhappy for us. This is fairly well understood -- the problem with the dollar is that nobody can think of a way out of this trap because we are so used to an easy life and would rather put off the day of reckoning.
