Interior Minister Says No Evidence Yet Given That Saudis Involved in Sept. 11

BERLIN (AP) - Saudi Arabia has been given no evidence its citizens helped carry out the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the interior minister said in German magazine interview released on Saturday.
The United States listed 15 Saudis among the 19 men accused of hijacking the planes used in the attacks. Osama bin Laden, the chief suspect in planning the devastation, is Saudi-born.

"So far, we've received no evidence or documents from the American authorities that justify the suspicion or accusations raised against Saudi Arabian citizens," Interior Minister Prince Nayef told Der Spiegel.

The Bush administration has praised Saudi Arabia for its cooperation in the battle against international terrorism while pressing the kingdom to block money flowing to bin Laden and his al-Qaida terrorist organization.

Nayef said the government would introduce tighter controls on organizations suspected of funding terror groups, but accused the West of double standards.

"Nobody pays serious attention to how much dirty money is on the market in the west: Billions of U.S. dollars from illegal arms dealing or drug money. Only when a few Islamic associations manage their money badly does the West lift a finger," he said.

Saudi Arabia's assistance in fighting terrorism was "exemplary," he said.

The prince urged the West to withdraw support for Israel's "clear terrorism" against the Palestinians to remove the main obstacle to better relations between Christians and Muslims.

Some Muslim clerics in Saudi Arabia have praised bin Laden as a hero.
