Actually, I did remember not only that cheesy novel, but how the Sverdlovsk investigators found that the anthrax cases followed the local wind patterns. I lined up a few spots on a map and they all fell in pretty much of a straight line. I then got a more detailed map, and the same thing held. They are uncannily on a straight line.
