The type of "dirty" bomb most likely to be used by bin Laden's group is barely nuclear at all. It would be the nuclear waste, the remnants of a nuclear energy or weapons program. This type of bomb would not explode but quantities of uranium of the wrong isotope, and strontium, and other radioactive materials could be distributed by a conventional bomb, or even a dump truck to radioactively pollute large sections of a city. It would be a very very expensive cleanup even if there were no mushroom cloud.
