Telia wins licence for wireless broadband access (Emphasis added, below...)
Telia was one of four operators to be licensed by the Post & Telecom Agency to build a nationwide network for Fixed Wireless Radio Access. The network, planned to be up and running in 2005, will be set up and operated by Skanova, a Telia Group company.
The Telia Group plans to establish both wholesale and retail business for Fixed Wireless Radio Access, FWA. The wholesale business is based on products developed in an "open value chain", which means that the products will be offered to all service providers and telecom operators in the Swedish market.
Skanova's offer includes capacity services as well as value added services for data communication, telephony and the Internet. On retail level, the products will be enhanced by adding e.g. service, billing and customer support, which will give a complete product line adapted to individual needs of companies, and later on private customers.
The great advantage of Fixed Wireless Radio Access is its flexibility. It means flexibility in delivery, installation as well as removal of customer equipment. It is only a matter of days between the order for capacity to delivery of the product.
The whole network will be up and running in 2005, but already in the first half of 2002 the first base station will be put in operation. telia.com _________________________________________________
Five applications for licences for wireless broadband
The Swedish National Post & Telecom Agency (PTS) has received five applications for licences for fixed area coverage radio access, also known as wireless broadband. Four national licences will be allocated following a so-called beauty contest. The licences will be issued on 1 October 2001. The applicants are:
Europolitan Telenordia Access (subsidiary of Telnordia) Telia Quadracom Wireless (Teracom and Arrowhead who are subsidiaries of Vattenfall - the Swedish State Power Corporation) Utfors PTS will now consider the applications. This will be done in two phases. In the initial phase, PTS will examine the suitability of the applications as regards financial capacity together with technical and commercial feasibility.
Those applications that satisfy the initial phase will proceed to a detailed consideration.
An overall assessment is made in the detailed consideration of how spectrum efficient the applications may be regarded. Among other things, the following criteria are used in this connection: the development throughout Sweden based on density of small and medium-sized enterprises, rate of development, financial capacity, technical and commercial feasibility. The development throughout Sweden and the rate of development (roll-out) will be attached the greatest importance.
Fixed area radio access can be used to offer telecommunications and data services and is a variant of wireless broadband. With fixed area coverage radio access, an entire area can be covered with broadband radio communication enabling, for example, high-speed Internet access and video conferencing. Communication via fixed area coverage radio access goes from a transmitter to fixed terminals, in contrast to communication via UMTS which goes from a transmitter to mobile terminals. It is expected that the users of fixed area coverage radio access will mainly be undertakings that need fixed broadband communication.
