American Taliban fighter 'admits being al-Qaida member'

[I can almost see the noose tightening around J.W's neck. I wonder if he is getting any legal advice? I doubt it from what's being reported...pb]

American Taliban fighter John Walker is reported to have claimed he met Osama bin Laden.

Newsweek says officials told them Walker admitted to being a member of al-Qaida and training at its camps.

He is said to have claimed he took part in terrorist exercises and learned how to use explosives and poisons.

It also says he claimed to have met al-Qaida officials, including bin Laden.

Newsweek also reports Walker admitted having been instructed in how to act in airports so as not to attract police attention. An official is reported to have said: "He was no innocent bystander. He was training to commit terrorist acts."

Newsweek says the disclosures have intensified the debate about what to do with Walker.

Attorney General John Ashcroft has asked Justice lawyers to review crimes he could be charged with, specifying he wants to know which ones carry the death penalty.

The most likely possibilities are treason and conspiracy to murder US government employees. Walker was present at the Mazar-e-Sharif prison camp when CIA agent Mike Spann was killed.

Another possibility is to court-martial Walker as an "enemy belligerent" in a US military court.

Walker has been transferred to a Marine amphibious ship, the USS Peleliu in the Arabian Sea.

His parents, Marilyn Walker and Frank Lindh, have issued a statement asking people to withhold judgment until all the facts are known.
