Orckit Wins ADSL Tender in Western Europe June 30, 1997 8:36 AM EDT
Tel Aviv, Israel, June 30, 1997 -- Orckit Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: ORCTF), a leading provider of Digital Subscriber Line systems and modems, today announced shipment of ADSL systems to a large western European telecom operator for deployment in one of the first and largest European Internet access trials, following Orckit's success in a tender. The trial will include 400 end-users.
Orckit President Izhak Tamir said the Company prevailed over its competitors in the tender because its FastInternet DSLAM System provides the "most advanced and complete access solution available today." Mr. Tamir added: "ADSL trials are becoming an essential building block of the strategic plans of the leading telecom operators and service providers, which are trying to better position themselves for the competition that is expected to follow deregulation in 1998."
The operator, for competitive reasons, has postponed the official announcement of the project.
Orckit's FastInternet system combines Rate Adaptive 8 Mbps ADSL modems, line concentration, maximum security provisions and traffic control in an end-to-end system that meets telecom operators' need to deploy high bandwidth services over their existing copper wire infrastructure.
Mr. Tamir said, several of the 400 end-users in the Internet access trial are already connected at 8 Mbps. Orckit's ADSL units will be spread among four central offices of the capital city of the telecom operator. Orckit has partnered with a leading local telecommunications company for delivery of an Orckit FastInternet system with 400 ADSL ports.
