Re: the leading server makers have committed to Itanium

What happened to the platforms they were "committed" to last week?

Which one will they be "committed" to next week?

Dell dropped Itanic for workstations, and the only area in which Itanic excels is floating point (some workstation software). In integer - which is what servers use - it is soundly beaten by Celeron.

Let's consider that one more time. In integer operations, which is what servers use, even when running benchmarks that Intel's compiler teams have been hand tuning for more than a year, Itanic is soundly beaten by Celeron.

If there were no X86 alternative, Intel could simple force the market to accept Itanic for servers by manipulating the platform. But dual processor Athlon MP systems are shipping, in 1U form factor, that are faster than the fastest $100,000 8-way Intel available a year ago (e.g. - they are fast enough). As of this month, Athlon supports 64bit 66MHz NICs and RAID controllers.

Do you think Intel will walk away from its existing server market to avoid losing face on Itanic?
