Turkey has paid it's dues relative to NATO. Turkeys incentive for becoming the EU proxy in the Mid east is full membership in the EU. Greece is the stumbling block to Turkey as a full fledged EU member, in addition there is a degree of racial reticence in the permanent EU against Turkey, as Turks are scattered throughout the EU as laborers, currently they hold a status as Mexicans do in the US. But Turkey has earned it's democracy over the last 100 years. Ata Turk is still a man to be revered for his work to make Turkey a secular democracy. It is high time that Turkey is elevated to the status of a state with full respect in the EU member community. The Turks as Muslim secularists have succeeded, it is their model that needs emulation, not some model imposed by the outside. ATA Turks revolution remains in an historical context as the shining light of Muslim democracy. Should we fail to accord Turkey it's rightful status as the EU's link to the Middle East, than we have failed, and we can expect our problems in ME to last much longer than it otherwise should.
