Re: Is this a megahertz thing, or are you trying to say something about performance? Are you only relating this to SPECint?

SPECint is a measure of integer performance. Server processor performance is primarily integer performance. The currently shipping Celeron is quite a bit faster for integer work than is the currently shipping Itanium.

That may not continue to be the case after McKinley comes out, but right now, that's the way it is. It was a loooong wait for Itanium/Merced, and we were given to expect a fair amount. Now we're told to wait for Itanium/McKinley. Maybe it will be fabulous....

Hear are some SPECint scores:
Chip Speed Score Price Notes
Itanium 800MHZ 314 - $3,500 - Dell (standard CPU)
Itanium 800MHZ 370 - $6,000 - HP (with 4megabyte L3 cache)
PIII 850MHZ 366 - $117
PIII 1.00GHZ 426 - $134
P4 1.30GHZ 475 - $109
Celeron 1.2GHZ 490? $97 - (Celeron 1.2 has PIII cache)
Athlon 1.40GHZ 495 - $98
P4 1.60GHZ 551 - $152
P4 2.00GHZ 642 - $407
AthlonXP 1.53GHZ 677 - $246 - XP 1900+
Why Itanium isn't selling is a mystery to me, do you have any insights?

Intel is the company that has wanted to live or die by SPEC - so be it.
